Birds, Bats & Purple Martins

Help the Birds - they will eat your bugs! Attract many birds to your yard with different feeders, housing and seeds. Enjoy the beauty and natural pest control ability of birds and bats in your own backyard, many birds are insect eaters!

Bats, Bluebirds, Purple Martins & all Swallows are insect eaters. Bats are mammals, just like humans, which means that all bats are warm blooded, have hair, bear live young, and feed their babies milk. At night Bats eat mosquitoes, moths, beetles, mayflies etc., and are known to consume up to 500 insects in a ½ hour. Purple Martins and Swallows are flying insect eaters of flies, mosquitoes, beetles, ants, wasps, moths, grasshoppers and numerous other insects. Create the ecosystem you want by providing desirable nesting sites, housing and shelter to attract and maintain a natural bird population. Black oil sunflower seed, nyjer (thistle) seed, peanut butter, suet, nectar and mealworms; are what NIC uses in our feeders and the birds love it! We regularly attract Downy, Hairy, and Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Nuthatches, Titmice, Wrens, Native Sparrows, Gold Finches, Cardinals and Blue Jays etc. to our feeders. Wrens love gardens and shrubs to find bugs for feeding their young. They have been seen making 1200 trips to the nest per day with insects. They feed on ants, aphids, beetles, caterpillars, mites spiders, grasshoppers, ticks etc. A Great Bird for your Garden!

Purple Martins

Purple Martins the largest of North American swallows with their dark purple plumage, cheerful song and totally insect diet are a welcome addition to anyone's yard. Attracting them is usually quite simple, offer them suitable nesting sites where they can readily build nests and set up home such as aluminum housing and gourds. Returning each spring from South America, they seem to know that living near humans will help protect them from predators. Gourds are the oldest, most successful artificial nesting places for purple martins and tree swallows - used originally by Native Americans. Not only will you be able to enjoy the sights and sounds of these beautiful birds, but their ability to eat almost their own weight in insects each day will more than repay your efforts to bring them into your yard.

All of the bird housing we offer is proven to attract the birds it is designed for, and in many cases the housing (nest sites) and proper location is all that is needed to attract the desired birds.

Hummingbirds & Orioles

Hummingbirds and Oriole diets are 20% nectar and 80% caterpillars and insects. Attract these colourful bug eaters with feeders and enjoy their brilliant colours and fun-filled antics.

NIC TIP: Feed Nyger (thistle) seed for the canaries and finches and only black oil sunflower seed for our native birds. You waste nothing and do not feed the non-native starlings and house sparrows. Both are a plague to our native, cavity nesting birds.
