Waps and Blur Paint

Waps and Blur Paint
September 13th, 2010

Have you tried this?

Down in South Florida, homeowners paint our house overhang with sky blue color paint. The paper wasps and the mud daubers will not build a nest on the blue paint. You can paint your bird houses underneath blue too! The idea behind it is these insects will be "fooled" into thinking the blue paint was actually the sky, which wasn't a safe place for a bug to loiter if it didn't want to get eaten.

Birds use Tools
September 20th, 2010

Did you know?

Bird tool use evolved for better grub (food), literally

Usage of sticks to dislodge wood-boring beetle grubs from rotting tree trunks requires a lot of time and practice.

Some birds, such as New Caledonian crows, use sticks as tools, and now researchers think they know why. Better Grub. This discovery helps to explain how and why tool use first evolved. But the answer isn't quite as obvious as you might think.
