Details for Birch Leafminer

Birch Leafminer APPLICATION

To be effective, Guardian for Birch Leafminer must be applied in spring or fall. In spring apply as soon as the soil temperature is above 10-degrees, *. To control Birch Leafminer from over wintering as a pupa and stop them transforming into adults, apply nematodes in early to mid-September. Nematodes will be actively hunting pupae until the ground temperature drops below 10 degrees.

Adult miners emerge in early to late May depending on temperatures. This process happens over a two-week period – This is the most important generation to treat. You must apply nematodes before the adults emerge.

  1. Open Guardian for Birch Leafminer beneficial nematode package, remove sponge and place in 1L (.26 gal) This will make a nematode concentrate.
  2. Apply nematode concentrate with an additional 15- 20L (4 – 5 gal) of water to your treatment area. Nematodes can be applied with a hose end sprayer or watering can.
  3. Apply nematodes to the drip line of the tree. This will vary with the size of your tree.

  4. Birch Leafminer larvae are fairly close to the soil surface – do not over water.

Treatments need to coincide with the life cycle of the leafminers. As they need to drop to the soil to complete their metamorphosis from larvae to adult insect. This is when the nematodes will take care of your pest problem

*An easy and accurate way to check soil temperature is to use a meat thermometer, place  metal portion of thermometer into soil wait 5 min and check temperature.
