Dicyphus hesperus is a predatory insect that feeds on many species of small, soft-bodied insects. This predator bug is similar to Macrolophus caliginosus, which is being used in Europe to control whitefly, spider mites, moth eggs, and aphids.
The adults are green, slim, long legged and about 6mm (0.25in) in length. Dicyphus adults and nymphs aggressively search out prey and then pierce their prey with its mouth parts and suck out the body fluids of its prey. Once the Dicyphus feeds on a pest, all that remains is the skin, most often found in its original form with a small hole where the insect was sucked out by the Dicyphus.
Dicyphus should not be used on its own to replace other biological control agents.
Dicyphus should be used with mullein banker plants.
Features: HOST: Greenhouse whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum), Tobacco whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). Dicyphus will feed on two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae), Thrips and Moth eggs but will not control these pests.
SHIPPED AS: Adults in tray with spreader paper and stem of plant.
OPTIMUM CONDITIONS: Tempertaure range 20 to 350C (68 to 950F)
Use Dicyphus hesperus when there is greater than 13 hours of light and temperatures are greater than 150C (590F). This species will enter diapauses (facultative) if environmental conditions are not met.
RELEASE RATE: Release Dicyphus as soon as whiteflies are found, early in the season at a rate of 0.25-0.5 bugs/m2 (10 ft2) of infested area; repeat in 2-3 weeks.
