If you’ve noticed tiny bugs hovering around your houseplants, you’ve probably got some uninvited guests — fungus gnats. But don’t worry, we’ve got the lowdown on why they’re here and how to show them the door (politely, of course).
Why Do Fungus Gnats Show Up?
It’s not you — it’s your watering habits.
Fungus gnats love:
- Soggy soil with poor drainage
- Organic debris and decaying plant matter
- High humidity (aka spa day conditions for bugs)
Basically, if your plant pot feels like a cozy swamp, they’re moving in.
Simple Ways to Spy on Them
Become a gnat detective:
- Stick a few yellow sticky traps near the soil — adults can’t resist that sunny color.
- Place a potato slice on top of the soil. Larvae will crawl up for a snack — and give themselves away.
Fun (and Actually Useful) Ways to Kick Them Out
Dry Them Out
Fungus gnat larvae need moisture to survive. Let your soil dry between waterings to break the cycle.
Bottom Watering = Top Tier
Water your plants from the bottom to avoid making the soil surface a bug resort.
